Lavender's Story

Lavender is well known in the community as the “Mother Teresa of Oils”. It is impossible to have lived in the same neighborhood as Lavender and not have been counseled/ healed/cared for at least once in your life.

Like a true mother, with love and tenacity, she touches the hearts and heals the bodies of those who come in contact with her. She looks after everyone with equal care, be it children, adults, trees, flowers or birds. She possesses an immense feminine gentleness but also a masculine strength and bravery. The balance which she provides to all those asking for it thus comes from within her.

She has honed several talents- she can lull both distressed adults and children to sleep, and also manage to calm everyone down, even the most restless and agitated. She is especially good with burns and bruises-she kisses every pain away in a matter of minutes. That is why she is particularly loved by children. Any time you crave serenity and a loving touch, you can bet she will be there for you, with her team of other herbaceous oils.

Clinical Applications

Immune support: Lavender is a great addition to blends formulated to boost the immune system. Lavender’s immunostimulant action stem from a combination of its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and stress-relieving properties (Aromahead Institute).

Musculoskeletal: Lavender is also a great addition to blends formulated to alleviate pain, headaches, inflammation and rheumatic conditions. Lavender’s powerful analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties are due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of nitric oxide, a chemical compound that causes pain and edema. This action blocks pro-inflammatory chemicals from being released into the tissue, reducing pain, inflammation, and tissue stagnation. (Rivot et al. 2002).

Skin: Lavender has proven anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, edema reducing, anti-microbial, and pain-relieving actions. This makes it effective for a wide range of skin-healing applications including the treatment of infections, wounds, itching, rash, ulcers, and other types of skin damage. Lavender blends well with Geranium for trauma and healing and with Tea Tree for reducing fungal and other infections including candida. One study demonstrated Lavender’s anti-allergic properties on a test population (Kim and Cho 1999 cited by Tisserand and Young 2014). Lavender also has a deodorizing effect. It eliminates bad body odor through its antibacterial actions and relatively high rate of evaporation.

Stress, anxiety, and insomnia: Linalool and linalyl acetate are the two compounds found in Lavender that are responsible for its exceptional effects on the nervous system, particularly its marked sedative effects (Buchbauer et al. 1991 and 1993). Several studies have shown that inhaling the aroma of Lavender or a topical application of the oil show significant results when it comes to overcoming insomnia and reducing stress and anxiety (Linck et al. 2009, Woelk and Schläfke 2010). Lavender can be inhaled directly, diffused or added to blends and creams to reduce stress and insomnia. It blends well with Frankincense, Bergamot and Patchouli.

Dysmenorrhea: Lavender is an excellent oil for relieving menstrual cramps. It blends well with Bergamot for this purpose.
