Geranium's Story

If you have Geranium as a friend then you are sorted for life. Geranium is one of the most caring, loving and comforting of the oils. She is sociable and friendly but never overbearing. At the same time, she is never too protective or overwhelming. If you need her help you need to ask for it, since it will never come unsolicited. However, when the cry for help comes she will immediately console you, make you a cup of tea and be there for you. That does not mean she is tone deaf- she simply wants you to have the courage to ask for what you need.

Geranium is the best adviser in terms of skin and natural beauty. She has flawless skin and radiant face so she gets a lot of looks of admiration. But then again, you won’t see Geranium advertised in magazines or social media- she absolutely despises that kind of attention. She would rather set-up a small boutique of her own or host workshops in her house. She prefers a small, close circle over several people who only partly care about the several qualities that she provides, and if you get a spot in her circle, consider yourself lucky!

Clinical Applications

Lymphatic: Inhaling the aroma of Geranium reduces menstrual-related bloating and fluid retention with its regulating action and gently stimulating effects on the lymphatic system. The oil’s lymphatic benefits are due to the vaso relaxant and hypotensive properties of citronellal, which is a major component of Geranium (Bastos et al. 2010).

Mood: Geranium has several properties that contribute to its uplifting, mood-boosting effect. Inhaling its aroma reduces depression (Perry and Perry 2006) and calms anxiety because of the actions of monoterpene alcohols in the oil (Setzer 2009). It is also an excellent tonic, restoring vitality and reversing the adverse effects of stress. Geranium can be diffused, inhaled directly or added to skin creams to enjoy the mood-boosting benefits.

Musculoskeletal: Topical application of Geranium blended with aloe Vera gel or other cool carrier creams is very effective for reducing inflammation and pain and managing symptoms of arthritis. Geranium’s anti-inflammatory properties stem from its two main components – citronellal and geraniol (Su et al. 2010). Multiple studies have shown that Geranium offers relief from nerve pain (Greenway et al. 2003) and reduces inflammation and swelling (Maruyama et al. 2006).

Skincare: Geranium offers several benefits for the skin and hair. A Geranium-Tea Tree blend is useful for keeping bacterial infections at bay. Topical application of a Geranium-Lavender blend calms inflammation, pain, bruising, and swelling. A blend of Geranium, Lemongrass, Lavender, and Tea Tree has potent antifungal properties. Adding Geranium to shampoo balances sebum production leaving hair neither too oil or too dry. Several studies have demonstrated Geranium’s anti-inflammatory properties (Boukhatem et al. 2013), antifungal actions (Lang and Buch Bauer 2012) and its actions against multiple Candida strains (Roseto et al. 2008).
