Lemon's Story

No matter her biological age, Lemon will always look and behave like a 20 year old. She is active, beaming with energy and displays unshakable confidence. She is never afraid to attempt any task or project and failure doesn’t scare her one bit. Her joy is infectious, and she is rumoured to never forget things you tell her- seems like someone everyone needs in their life, right?

Lemon is always ready to go, and equally sharp minded. You would notice her house is always sparkling clean with seemingly very little effort. She never seems to get any illness and germs seem to pass right through her. You may think she’s just lucky but hold on! If you bring her along with you, you can also be free of germs, just by having her around!

Everyone always wonders how her immunity can be so strong, and lemon says that the secret is keeping a positive attitude and spreading good vibes.

Aroma

Fresh, bright, lemony and fruity. It is widely used in perfumery as top note.

Clinical Applications

Circulation: Lemon has potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that are very effective for alleviating swelling and pain associated with varicose veins. Blending Lemon with Patchouli boosts its efficacy.

Mood: One study showed that inhaling d-limonene, a component of Lemon oil, reduces anxiety (Lima et al. 2012c). Another showed that it reduces psychological and physical stress (Fukumoto et al. 2007). Yet another study showed that it reduced depression effects (Perry and Perry 2006). All of these properties make Lemon an excellent addition to mood-boosting diffuser and topical blends.

Musculoskeletal: Lemon’s analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antinociceptive properties work together to reduce pain and inflammation. It blends well with several oils including Frankincense, Lavender, Patchouli, Ginger, Geranium, and Black Pepper. Lemon’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may be attributed to the antinociceptive actions of d-limonene Hirota et al. (2010).

Skin: Lemon is rich in monoterpenes such as limonene that enhance skin penetration (Takayama and Nagai 1994) and tighten tissues. These properties combined with the oil’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial actions make Lemon very effective for reducing blemishes and acne. Lemon also lowers the heat in tissues and keeps the skin cool.

Immunostimulant: Lemon’s is very effective for boosting the immune system and promoting well-being. This is due to the combination of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions together with its tonic effect on the mind and body (Aromahead Institute). Lemon can be inhaled directly or in a diffuser or added to body care products to gets its immunostimulant benefits and reduce infections.

Liver support: d-Limonene component supports liver detox process through the production of glutathione S-transferase (Tisserand and Young, 2014)

Air purifier: Lemon has strong antibacterial and antiviral effects and is efficient in purifying the air

Maximum topical use dilution: 2% (2 drops in 1 tbsp carrier oil). Only use diluted on the skin (dilution ca be done in any carrier like coconut, olive oil, lotion etc). See here DILUTION GUIDELINES according to age or ailment.

Like all citrus oils, Lemon is phototoxic (a certain component gets activated under UV rays exposure and can cause skin rash/burn)

There is no safety risk as long as you do not exceed the recommended dilution or as long as you apply on the skin in an area not exposed to direct sunlight. Diffusing can be done anytime and bears no risk!

After skin application, it’s best to stay out of the direct sun and tanning beds for at least 12 hours. Exposure to these elements within 12 hours of topical application of Bergamot can result in skin burning.

Only use diluted on the skin. Discontinue in case of any skin irritation. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears and sensitive areas.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not apply on the skin of children younger than 2 years old. For small kids younger than 2 y diffusion is the safest method always.

If pregnant, nursing or under medical care please consult physician. Do not use internally, unless directed by a licensed aromatherapist or physician.

Use with caution around pets. When diffusing in the room make sure the door is open so that the animal can leave in case of discomfort.

Shelf Life & Storage

Shelf life: 2 years

We recommend storing oils in a cool, dark and dry area away from direct sunlight. Keep the cap closed tightly to avoid oxygen exposure. Citric oils especially have a longer shelf life if kept in the fridge. Oils that are past expiry date should not be used for therapeutic purpose but they can still be used for cleaning.
